This is my first blog post. Self-employed and loving It was already named into existence long before I made it official. There are so many unique individuals all working for the American dream and to trump the “cubicle”. The phrase self-employed and loving it, has been used so many times by so many people, and I wanted to create a place for us to come together together to share thoughts and ideas, propose our problems and hopefully get answers to situations that we’re struggling with. Part of the beauty of being self-employed, is not having the conventional restrictions of the workplace. On the flip side, though we can’t be experts in all the aspects of our business. So here at Self-employed-and-loving-It, you’ll find ideas and a unique community that’s familiar with some of what you go through on a daily basis. As it turned out, they only accept donations on Tuesday and it was Thursday, so I didn’t end up making a donation after all. But it was a defining aha moment. So I guess you could say I’m self-employed-and-loving-it.
The Blood Bank
Yesterday, I made an impromptu stop at the Blood Bank because they’d called me on Monday to schedule a visit. I didn’t know they only drew blood on Tuesdays. So here it was I was in the area, so I thought I’d stop by. It had been a long time since the last time I was there, so I ended up going in the wrong door and had to walk all through the back offices to the front reception area, peaking into each slate gray and white cubicle and office along the way. I never really formally stopped looking for employment, it just sort of phased out of my daily/weekly activities as I manage to sustain myself with my eBay business and learning affiliate marketing, and social media to replace the grueling task of the eBay routine. Anyway, what I noticed about my walk down memory lane (memories of past employment), is that I didn’t relish the idea of being put back in the cage, and being forced to unquestioningly follow the lead of the fearless leader. I felt an odd feeling come over me, and I felt it physically in my upper diaphragm area, just like a rotten gut feeling assuring me that now that now that I’ve managed to escaped, that never want to be stuck in those tired little cubicles again.
The one big drawback I have about working alone, and I’m trying to fix now, is not having the collaborative efforts of ideas coming together for a single cause. I recently started reaching out though Facebook to find other individuals who have a different or similar role as myself and who may in time find opportunities to collaborate on large projects or to refer a friend or associate for a photo journalism or fashion project, or brand campaign. Here you will find lots of ideas and tips for starting and growing your business. I can’t promise that I will always have an answer for you, but I can promise that I will point you towards the resources to find it as well as through comments and feedback from the community. I welcome all input from anyone out there in the community who has any useful suggestions and advice to contribute.

I am busy in my own self-employed ventures from blogging, to real estate and affiliate marketing. I started out years ago with eBay but even before there was the internet, I was doing mail order
marketing and now the internet makes it even easier. As time permits, I will be adding great content with great resources and tools for the self-employed. So please check back soon and feel I welcome any your stories or request to post as a guest blogger.

I am sorry to take so long to reply to posts but I am encouraged with each new comment that I see posted here and to know there are others in the struggle. Yes it is a struggle but one I’d take any day vs. the struggle of a dead-end job. There’s so much to learn and thanks to the University of Google Youtube, Facebook and so many others that share there stories on blogs like mine, we all get to learn from one another. Unlike the workplace where you only follow the rules of someone else who’s follow rules whether they actually work or not. BTW I have a lot of content for this blog that I just need to make the time to enter and to give my page a fresh new format. So I love you guys for stopping by and sharing your thoughts with me. Advertising, marketing, word of mouth, you name it I’ve tried it. Getting inside a box store like Office Max is like pull teeth. Do you have a road map or at least a sign post that might help?
Posted by Bryan F | March 2, 2012, 3:49 pmI have been self employed for 23+ years and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I did work for a friend in her little wonderful restaurant. It was fun and very part time so I could continue my own
gigs. I find myself in a situation of starting over and wonder if it would be easier to “get a job”. I keep coming back to the self empowering realization that I am my own boss.

Thanks for the comment and yes, I’ve had the “get a job” debate many times over. I have great office and administrative, and financial managment skills., but circumstance has it so I’m virtually black-listed in the job market through the roll of the domino effect. On one hand I used to hate getting up and going to work every day, and now I look at being locked out from the job market as a blessing. I’ve always been an entrepreneur on my own time, but this really forces me to dig deeper and to put my 100% all into whatever I do. And yes, it is self-empowering. The last full time job I had was with a company that I was verbally abused at and yelled at all the time until one day they finally decide to let me go since I wasn’t taking the cue. And that was 10 years ago. Since that time I decided no one else would ever have the power to control when and how I pay my bills or when and how I eat. Yes, that’s taking back your power!!!

I’ve had to learn that I am not in controll of anything but my self and the way I look at life. I’ve scaled back on the THINGs that are not important. Still finding the love in it and working at the trust in the world stuff, but I am happy!

As working and keeping up with the onuses, and sometimes accepting title in lieu of higher pay, we sometimes come to realize that less is better.

I have been self-UNemployed for the last year, and at my age (56) it is so tough to find an employer who wants to pay me for my experience. I have a feeling that self-employed is what my future will look like. I just have to find a niche I can fill!

Each of us have arrived here at different times and have one common thread that we’re all survivors of the “employment trap”. Like a mice learning to get the cheese without interfering with the trap, at the end of the day we still have to eat. Good luck in all your endeavors and just try to find something you like and that you’re good at. Marketing is key, no one will know you’re in business till you let them know what you’re business is. And don’t allow those who are still in the “race” with the mousetrap to discourage you from your dreams.
Posted by creativemag | July 1, 2012, 5:49 amThe self-employed has something I don’t have– talent, which I admire. I am too comfortable with a 9-to-5 in an industry that has good job security in this day and age. Further, I am not that talented to work on my own.
I like what I do, IT. But I hate being a wage slave and dealing with office politics.

I currently work full time for a school system but I would be so happy to build a home business I could transition to in a few years. Something credible I could work on a few hours from home at night.
